Keep Your Pet Smiling with Quality Dentistry
Your pets need dental care as much as you do, yet it’s often forgotten by even the most well-meaning pet owners. Payson Pet Care is here to help your pet keep smiling. Our Payson veterinarians are fully equipped to make sure your pet’s mouth stays healthy and we offer a full range of dental services to keep your pet’s oral health under control. During their regular wellness exams, we’ll take a close look at your pet’s mouth and jaw. If we notice their oral health could use more attention, we’ll be able to take care of your pet on site.
Periodontal Disease: What Is It?
Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that hold the teeth in place. When left untreated, this disease can cause damage to the teeth and jawbone. Periodontal disease is the most common illness afflicting cats and dogs.
Look for the following signs of periodontal disease:
- Bad breath
- Loose teeth
- Difficulty eating
- Excessive drooling
- Blood in saliva or water dish
If you notice any of the above symptoms in your pet, they may be suffering from periodontal disease. Our veterinary team is here for you and your pet! We can help them get back on the road to good oral health with thorough dental care.
How Does My Pet Get Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease in pets works the same way as it does in humans. The buildup of plaque, a bacterial film on the teeth, hardens over time, allowing for more plaque to build up on the teeth. Without proper brushing, the plaque continues to build up and spread below the gumline, where it can cause infection.
When the disease is in the early stages, brushing can dislodge the plaque. We know it’s difficult to get your pet to sit still for a good brushing, so there are also toys and treats that we can recommend that will help dislodge plaque.
However, once the plaque is below the gumline, only a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia will be able to effectively remove it.
Dental Cleanings at Payson Pet Care
If your pet needs a professional dental cleaning to get them smiling again, our Payson veterinarians are ready to help. Dental cleaning requires general anesthesia. As an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited animal hospital, Payson Pet Care is fully equipped to monitor your pet throughout their cleaning and ensure they safely come out from under sedation.
Dental cleanings will include removing plaque, polishing the teeth, and applying an anti-plaque treatment to deter future buildup. We’ll help you learn how to maintain your pet’s new smile at home, too. Remember: regular wellness exams with our Payson veterinarians goes a long way to keeping your pet’s smile healthy for the long term.
